Arlene L. Schmitt, 80 of Gilman, went to heaven Sunday,
February 17, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family and
under the care of Hope Hospice.
She was born on October 30, 1932 in Potlatch, Idaho, the daughter
of the late Wesley and Helen (Morrow) Hoover. Her family moved to
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when she was a young girl. On
November 13, 1950 Arlene was united in marriage to Russell
Schmitt in Ontonagon, MI. The couple moved to Gilman and
has resided there since. Arlene and Russell raised nine
children. She was active in her faith, was an avid gardener
and a great cook. In her later years she cooked for events at
Dot & Jerry's. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren great
grandchildren, sewing her quilts and helping with the maple
syrup. No one ever left her house hungry or with a hole in
their jeans.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Russell of
Gilman, her children, Dan (Gail) Schmitt of Gilman, Judy
(Terry) Erdman of Ladysmith, Sally (Jay Keeler) Schmitt of
Green Bay, Rita (Mark) Gasior of Jump River, Wayne (Adela)
Schmitt of Gilman, Lillian (Peter) Zach of Jump River, Dean
(Liz) Schmitt of Gilman, Robert (Carolyn) Schmitt of Gilman
and Raymond (Teri) Schmitt of Gilman, 29 grandchildren, 18
great grandchildren, her brothers, Wesley Earl (Shirley)
Hoover of Silver City, MI, Bobby (Jan) Hoover of Mass City, MI
and Bill (MaryAnn) Hoover of Racine, her sisters, Elsie Corey
of Hancock, MI and Betty (Joe) Golding of Louisville, KY and
many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Dorothy
Larson.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 at
the Gilman High School Gymnasium. Burial will follow in the
Meadowbrook Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 PM on
Saturday and from Noon until time of service Sunday all at the
Gilman High School Gym. The Gilman Funeral Home assisted
the family with arrangements.
