Clara A. Winkel

Age 96, of Colby, passed away Sunday evening, March 3, 2013 at the House of the Dove Marshfield with family at her bedside and under the tender care of Ministry Home Care Hospice. 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby.  The Rev. Mark Neumann will officiate.  Burial will follow in Colby Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Thursday at the church in Colby from 4:30PM until 8PM and again at the church on Friday from 10AM until time of services.  Acting as Clara’s pallbearers will be Lorin Dassow, David and Daniel Longsdorf, Daniel Holtzheimer, Nathaniel Swenson and Lester Willner.  Clara’s honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters: Darla Dassow, Cari Carlson, Kimberli Winkel and Kristina Holtzheimer.

Clara was born May 24, 1916 in the town of Colby, daughter of the late George and Wilhelmina (Schulz) Theilig.  On September 4, 1937 she married Alex Winkel at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby.
He died February 20, 1978.

Besides raising her family, she was employed at area supper clubs as a cook, cooked at Meadow Farms in Abbotsford, worked at a local hardware store and at both the clinic and post office in Colby. 

She was very active in the community.  Along with being a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clara belonged to the Zion Sewing Circle, Our Afternoon Out Homemakers Club,  Colby Senior Citizens Group, Clark County Historical Society, Friends of Colby Library.  She shared her times and talents by volunteering at the Colonial House and reading to Zion Lutheran Preschoolers.  Clara’s hobbies included working in her vegetable and flower gardens, raspberry picking, crocheting, ceramic works and hand crafting.

Survivors include her children: Janice Dassow of Medford; Mardell (Richard) Longsdorf of St. Cloud, MN; Darrel (Marie) Winkel of Hewitt; her grandchildren: Darla Dassow of Robbinsdale, MN; Lorin (Bobbie) Dassow of Medford; Cari Carlson of Marshfield; David (Alissa) Longsdorf of Superior; Daniel (Laurie) Longsdorf of Springfield, MN; Kimberli Winkel of Rockford, IL and Kristina (Daniel) Holtzheimer of Auburndale; 13 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Madelyne P. Thums, age 69, of Curtiss, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013 at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Madelyne was born August 26, 1943 to Frank and Dorothy (Stephensen) Arrigoni in Cicero, Illinois. She graduated from Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL.
 

Madelyne and Ronald Thums were united in marriage on February 1, 1964 in Forest Park, IL. They later moved to the Curtiss area. Madelyne graduated from St. Joseph’s Nursing School and worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the birthing center.

Madelyne was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. She was a volunteer at the public library and the Humane Society of Clark County. Madelyne enjoyed crafting, camping, fishing, and traveling. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her lasting sense of humor and kind heart.

Madelyne is survived by her husband, Ronald Thums, her children: Julie Burt of Rhinelander, Ben (Sherri) Thums of Hartland, and Dori (Adam) Tooke of Milwaukee; and her grandchildren: Christopher Thums, Alex Thums, and Veronica Tooke. She is further survived by her half brothers: Bill (June) Johnsen of Oak Lawn, IL and George (Kathy) Thoede of Stoughton, WI.

Madelyne is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Carl Arrigoni, and her half brother, Fred Thoede.

Daniel L. Ahlers, age 24, of Lincoln City, OR, formerly of Jump
River, died as a result of a jet ski accident on Sunday, March 3,
2013 in the ocean at Depoe Bay. Daniel was born March 31,
1988 in Ladysmith, the son of Monte & Kathy (Kavanagh) Ahlers.
After high school, Dan moved out west where he owned his own
lawn care and landscape business, and did home remodeling
jobs during the winter months. He enjoyed playing guitar,
listening to music and ball room dancing with the love of his life,
Lilli.

Dan is survived by his parents, fiancée, Lilli Geurrera of Lincoln
City, OR; siblings, Bobby (Justine) Ahlers of Eau Claire, Cassie
(Miguel) Munoz of California; and Ethan Ahlers of Chippewa
Falls. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents,
Giles and Florence Kavanagh, and paternal grandparents, Jack
& Lenora Ahlers.

Services will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at
the Sheldon Church of Christ with Pastor Jeremy Allard
officiating. Friends and family may call on Saturday evening from

Harlan H. Witt, age 89, of Colby, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Pine Ridge Assisted Living in Colby. A funeral service will be held 12:00 PM Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Colby. Rev. Mark Neumann will officiate. A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of services at the church in Colby. Burial will follow the service at the Colby Memorial Cemetery.

Harlan was born April 16, 1923 to Charles and Hilda (Molle) Witt in the Town of Green Grove. He received his education at Elmwood County School. Harlan and Margaret Schilling were joined in marriage on June 19, 1946. He farmed in the Town of Beaver and moved into Colby upon retirement in 1991.

Harlan enjoyed polka dancing, square dancing, and playing sheepshead.

Harlan is survived by his wife, Margaret Witt, his children: Dennis Witt of Spencer, Dorine Poehnelt of De Pere, and Donald Witt of Spencer; his grandchildren: Patty Poehnelt, Delaine Laski, and Amber Elsenpeter; and four great grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters, Elaine (Late Milford) Frome and Joanne (Jack) Leichtman.

Harlan is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Marion, who died in infancy.

John D. Hutman, age 69 of Abbotsford, died unexpectedly on Thursday March 7, 2013 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. John was born December 27, 1943 in Chicago, IL, the son of Donald and Joan (Nagraba) Hutman. He graduated in 1962 from the Owen-Withee High School.

He was united in marriage to Patricia A. Spence on December 26, 1966 at St Bernard’s Catholic Church.

John and Patricia owned and operated Hutman Heating and Air Conditioning in Abbotsford since 1968.

He was an active member of St Mary’s Catholic Church.

John lived his faith. His family and business were driving forces in his life, especially the love for his wife, Patricia, and his girls. He also cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.

John had a zest for life and a childlike curiosity in life, as well as in his workshop. He especially took pleasure in finding out what made things tick.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Patricia, Abbotsford, and his six girls: Angela (Craig) Johnson, Farmington, MN; Leslie (James) York, North St Paul, MN; Crystal (Michael) Miller, Hudson, WI; Tabetha (David) Otten, Abbotsford, WI; Given (Sherif Youssef) Hutman, Chicago, IL; and Briana Hutman, Abbotsford; Nine grandchildren: Ty, Drew and Emma Johnson, Spencer and Abigail York; Julia & Ashley Otten; Angelo and Gabriel Hutman.

He is further survived by two sisters, Florette (Rae) Kohn, Medford, WI and a twin sister Kathy (Ray) Cahill, Bloomingdale, IL.

Charmagne A. “Sherry” Tice (Nee Lang) of Jackson passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on March 9, 2013 at the age of 75. 

Sherry was born on January 14, 1938 in Medford Wisconsin the daughter of the late Walter and Ada (Nee Nelson) Lang.  Sherry was a graduate of Medford High School and Taylor County Teachers College.  She taught all eight grades at a rural one room school near Medford.  Sherry was united in marriage to David Tice on September 19, 1959 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Medford.  After marriage, she accompanied her husband as he completed a 22 year Navy Career, Living in Tennessee, Newfoundland (Canada), Maryland and Florida. Sherry was an active Navy wife, confidently enduring the separations that come with military service while raising three young daughters.  Following David's retirement, the family moved to Cedarburg where she was employed as a Pharmacy Clerk at Snyder Drug Store for nearly 20 years.  She was an active member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving as secretary of the Ladies Aid and attending the Wednesday AM Bible Study group.  Sherry enjoyed crafts, gardening, needlework, spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with her husband.
 

Sherry is survived by her husband David; Children: Catherine Skelton, Joanna Stepanski and Julie (Dave) Zietlow; grandchildren: Caroline and Rebecca Skelton; Patrick and Madelynn Stepanski; Amelia and David Zietlow.

 

MARGIE E. SOVA      AGE:  90

Eldred A. Zastrow, age 87, of the Town of Hamburg, Marathon County, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at his home under the care of his family and Ministry Home Care Hospice.

Eldred was born on the family farm on April 9, 1925, in the Town of Hamburg, son of the late Paul and Elisabeth (Winter) Zastrow. He married Jean E. Borchardt on September 8, 1951, in the Town of Berlin. She survives. Eldred had been a dairy farmer in the Town of Hamburg, and farming was his passion. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years; dart ball; and deer hunting.

Besides his wife, Jean E. Zastrow, of the Town of Hamburg, Eldred is survived by three daughters, Kay (Mrs. Scott) Drake, Julie (Mrs. Richard) Kuck, and Jolene (Mrs. Jeff) Draxler, all of Athens; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Mrs. Trever) Ostrowski, Wausau, and Justin (wife, Shannon) Kuck, Jill (Mrs. Jonathon) Heier, Jordan Kuck, Brittany (Mrs. Phil) Draxler-Sukow, Jeremy Kuck, and Brooke and Bradley Draxler, all of Athens; four great grandchildren, Jayce and Riley Ostrowski, Hattie Heier, and Mason Kuck; and one sister, Ellen Vandre, Athens.

The funeral will be at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Town of Hamburg. The Rev. Joel Danner will officiate. William H. “Bill” Denzin age 84 of Milan died Sunday evening, March 17, 2013 at the Golden Living Continental Manor, Abbotsford. Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens, Wisconsin. Pastor Andy Alberts will officiate. Mark Schroeder will provide music for congregational singing. Burial will be in the Colby Memorial Cemetery, with Bill’s nephews serving as pallbearers. A time of visitation will be held from 4-8:00PM Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens and again on Saturday from 10:30AM until the time of service. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home, Abbotsford is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bill was born July 26, 1928 in the town of Holton, Marathon County. His parents were William and Margaret (Jakobi) Denzin. He attended school in the town of Holton.

Mr. Denzin served in the US Army and was honorably discharged.

On August 29, 1953 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan, Bill was united in marriage to Shirley Fasse. The couple celebrated 59 years of marriage.

At a young age Bill began working alongside his father on the family farm. In 1954 Bill and Shirley purchased a farm in the town of Johnson, where they farmed until 1961. He then accepted a position at Marathon Cheese. Bill became a union heavy equipment operator and worked for Kleist Trucking and later for James Peterson & Son in road construction, until retiring in 1993. He remained active in the Operating Engineers Local 139 throughout his retirement.

Family and faith were central in Bill’s life. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens.

Bill enjoyed fishing in the summertime and ice fishing in the winter. He loved being outdoors. Woodworking and snowmobiling were some of his interests. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, especially for how creative he was when story telling or reading of nursery rhymes. For a man that didn’t really like cats, he could quite often be found napping with his cat “Tiggy”.

Bill is lovingly survived by his wife, Shirley Denzin, Milan, daughters, Janine Hupe, Stratford; Maureen (Gary) Belanger, Athens; Corrine (Duane) Bauer, Marshfield; 9 grandchildren, Nathan (Amanda) Hupe, Miranda (Doug Johnson) Hupe, Sarah (Clayton) Venzke, Mindy (Bill) Davis, Becca (Brian) Simpson, Cody, Robin, Holly and Tony Bauer and two step grandchildren, Todd Hupe and Rochelle (Kelly) Blosl, 5 great grandchildren, Juliette and Daniel Hupe, Sydney Venzke, Callie Davis and Owen Simpson, 4 step great grandchildren, Brittany Barritt, Kristen Schecklman, Taylor Hupe and Derek Willman and one sister, Elaine Underwood of Colby further survives.

A son-in-law, Daniel Hupe, a brother, Eldon Denzin and sisters, Delores Wittlinger and Evelyn Bunkelman preceded Bill in death.

Carol Ann Stuttgen

April 21, 1956 - March 17, 2013

Carol Ann Stuttgen, age 56, of Colby, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 21, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. Father Dan Hackel will officiate. A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with a Rosary at 4:00 PM and again visitation will be held on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of services at St. Mary’s in Colby.

Carol was born April 21, 1956 to Eugene and Florence (Stauner) Broeske. She attended Pleasant Hill Grade School and Saint Louis Catholic School in Dorchester and was a 1974 graduate of Abbotsford High School. Carol and Melvin Stuttgen were united in marriage on October 4, 1986 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. After graduating from high school she was employed as a cook at Medo Farms in Abbotsford and then Colby Café, later for the Colonial Center Nursing Home in Colby and in the bakery at County Market in Abbotsford. In her later years Carol was employed at Fiskars in Spencer until the plant closed. Carol then worked for Lifenet in Colby until the time of her death.

Carol was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. She was a member of St. Mary’s Christian Mothers. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Carol is lovingly survived by her husband; Melvin Stuttgen of Colby, her children; Carrie Stuttgen of Colby, Susan Stuttgen of Colby and Patrick Stuttgen of Colby. She is further survived by her brothers and sisters; David (Linda) Broeske of Abbotsford, Jean (Dennis) Beisner of Colby, Duane (Sharon) Broeske of Stetsonville, Jim (Cheryl) Broeske of Abbotsford and Donald Broeske of Rib Lake.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents; Eugene and Florence Broeske and her sister; Marilyn Broeske.

In 1996 Rose moved to Medford. Enjoyed baking, crafts, quilting, flower gardening, trips with the ladies aid, and fishing. Rose enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. They were often treated to molasses cookies and kuchen.

Leona M. Kuegler, 97, of Dorchester, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester. Rev. Jerome Freimuth will officiate. A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the church in Dorchester. Burial will follow the service at Dorchester Memorial Cemetery.

Leona Schultz was born December 20, 1915 to Paul and Erna (Wilke) Schultz in the town of Mayville, Clark County. She attended Brady Grade School, Curtiss High School for two years, and then Abbotsford High School for two years. She was a 1934 graduate of Abbotsford High School. Leona and Herbert Kuegler were united in marriage on August 27, 1941 at Saint Peter Lutheran Parsonage, Dorchester. Marriage ceremony was performed by the Reverend John Brandt. Leona with her husband, Herbert, farmed in the town of Little Black, Taylor County for 38 years, from 1941 to 1979.

After Herbert’s passing in May of 1985, Leona moved to Dorchester. She moved into Colby Retirement Community seven years ago and later resided in the Clark County Health Care Center. Leona enjoyed crocheting, playing piano, and jigsaw puzzles.

She was a lifetime member of Saint Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester and was a member of Ladies Aid and LWML Societies.

Leona is survived by her daughters: Sharon (Frank) Adler and Carmen (David) Housel; her grandchildren: Laura (Donald) Breslin, Rachelle (Peter) Benson, and Ronson (Kerri) Mahla; her great grandchildren: David Benson, Aaron Benson, Luke Benson, Paul Benson, Riley Breslin, Megan Breslin, Allison Breslin, Kesech Mahla; and many nieces and nephews.

Leona is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, her grandson: Charles Pierce; and her siblings: Clarence Schultz, Albert Schultz, and Verna Rosenquist.
