David O. Carlson

David O. Carlson, 76, of Abbotsford, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at the Just Like Home Assisted Living Facility in Colby, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 3, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Abbotsford. Reverend Marcia Thomas will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:30 until time of service at the church on Friday and following the service a light lunch will be served at the church. Interment will follow at the Unity Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery.

David was born to Oscar and Viola (Schwantes) Carlson on April 11, 1937 at the family farm in Brighton Township, Marathon County. He attended Romeo Grade School and Unity and Colby High Schools. David graduated from Colby High School in 1955. Following graduation, David served in the United States Army including at a station in Germany.

David was an avid sports participant and fan throughout his life. He played varsity high school basketball and baseball and, as an adult, enjoyed umpiring and watching local sporting events in the Unity, Colby and Abbotsford area. He also cheered on the Badgers and the Packers.

David excelled at his role as “Uncle Dave” to his Alaska and Minnesota nieces and nephew, visiting when he could and sending practical gifts for the holidays. While working at ‘Oshkosh B’ Gosh’ he decided the Alaskan nieces and nephew should have insulated overalls. They were thrilled with “Uncle Dave’s” present.

He is survived by his brothers; Robert (Cam) Carlson of Fairbanks, AK, and Douglas Joe (Rita) Carlson of Hastings, MN; Robert and Cam’s children, Kris (Dean Bumstead) Carlson of Bellingham WA, Brett (Jillian Simpson) Carlson of Anchorage, AK, and Kelly (David) Guarino of Carlisle, MA; Joe and Rita’s children, Cassie (Paul) Bjorkstrand, Sam Carlson, and Jessie Carlson all of the Hastings, MN area; and grandnieces and nephew, Anna Stringham, Xan Carlson and Devon Bumstead.

David is preceded in death by his parents.

David and his family greatly appreciated; the extended Carlson and Schwantes families for including Dave in their family gatherings; the Abbotsford Lions Club and Jim Schiferl including him in their club activities, Matt Dietrich for his help and friendship; Bonnie Christner for her help and friendship and especially, Eunice Kleparski and the staff of Just Like Home for their outstanding care of Dave during his illness.

While in Medford, he worked as a volunteer for the Commission on Aging, and was instrumental in getting the Taylor County Humane Society Shelter established. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, his cats and dogs.

Florence E. “Dolly” Piller, Stetsonville, died on Thursday, April 18 at Medford Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center where she resided for the past seven months, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hope Hospice.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville with Father Fredrick Brost officiating. Interment will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers are Steven Piller, Scott Piller, Robert Piller, Brian Piller, Randy Elliott and Jake Brock.

 

Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until 10.45 a.m. Monday, April 22 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stetsonville. Hemer Funeral Home of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.


 

Florence was born on July 1, 1928 in Medford, to the late Henry and Elizabeth Schwarting (Maiden Name: McHale). She attended Medford area schools. In 1942 she married Robert H. Piller. On December 26th, 2012, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.


 

In 1967 they relocated to Illinois, where they lived for 23 years. In 1990, they moved back to Stetsonville where they owned and operated Partners Bar and Restaurant. In 1994 they finally retired and continued to live in Stetsonville. Dolly enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, trips to the casino and her family.


 

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stetsonville. She was a proud member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Sycamore, Illinois, She cooked for numerous weddings, banquets and parties where her potato salad made her famous.


 

Survivors include her husband Robert of Stetsonville; four sons, Gary of Medford, Bruce of Fond du Lac, Mark (Debbie) of West Fargo, North Dakota and Rocky (Debbie) of Crystal Lake, Illinois; two daughters, Betty Elliott (Dennis) of Cortland, Illinois and Lynn Retherford (Doug) of DeKalb, Illinois, daughter in law Dora Piller, Schaumburg, Illinois; 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.


 

Florence was preceded in death by her children, Donna and Dennis (Butch), parents, Henry and Elizabeth, one brother, Henry Schwarting; three sisters, Linda Piller, Doris Rabska, and Elsie Blank.

MARGARET A. RUDNICK, age 85, of Thorp, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital, in Eau Claire, on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin. Rev. Madanu Sleeva Raju will officiate and burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Mike Rudnick, Riley Rudnick, David Rudnick, Hunter Rudnick, Matthew Rudnick, Nathan Rudnick, Jonathan Rudnick and Jason Pogodzinski. Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Rudnick, Amy Gunderson, Becky Eisenberger, Stacy Pogodzinski, Kailey Rudnick, Maggie Wrobel and Sheena Pogodzinski. Visitation will be held at the church, on Wednesday, from 9:30am until time of service, with a rosary service beginning at 10:45am.
 

Margaret Ann Peerboom was born on July 11, 1928 in Danvers, MN, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Fennell) Peerboom. She was raised on the family farm and received her education at area schools. Margaret was united in marriage to Lawrence L. Rudnick on September 28, 1948 in Danvers, MN. She drove school bus and farmed with her husband near Anamoose, ND until 1960, at which time they moved to a farm in the Town of Roosevelt, rural Thorp. In 1981, they sold the farm to their son, Donald, and moved to a small home in the Town of Taft.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Margaret had many interests and hobbies, but especially loved being with her family, gardening, flowers, cooking, baking, she was known for her homemade buns which she made for her grandchildren's weddings, and babysitting for anyone who would ask her.
 

She will be dearly missed by her children: Donald (Sue) Rudnick of Thorp; Peggy (Rick) Wrobel of Stanley; Carol Rudnick of Thorp; Rodney (Kris) Rudnick of Stanley; Nancy (Russ) Pogodzinski of Cadott; Lawrence Rudnick, Jr. of Thorp; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren on the way; 5 siblings: Marie (Sylvester) Muehlbauer of Danvers, MN, Anne Geyer of Benson, MN, Jim (Donna) Peerboom of Rockford, IL, Elaine Schultz of Benson, MN, Rose Banister of Starbuck, MN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and her favorite companion, "Tinky."
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence, on January 20, 2008; one daughter: Cynthia Rudnick on December 31, 1981; one sister: Gladys Hoberg; and 2 brothers: Bill and John Peerboom.

He enjoyed reading the Bible, playing on the computer, spending time with family, playing cards and games at the Cedar Court Apartments, and growing flowers.

Victor Charles Smazal, age 71, of Colby, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the Colonial Center in Colby. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 27, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. Father Dan Hackel will officiate. A visitation will be held Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with a Rosary at 4:00 PM and again visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of services at St. Mary’s in Colby.

Victor was born March 3, 1942 to Charles and Clara (Ress) Smazal in Fenwood, Wisconsin. He attended Riverside Country School in rural Colby. Victor and Carolyn Stumpner were united in marriage on November 9, 1968 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Abbotsford. In his younger years Victor built pole sheds and silos and worked at Weyerhaeuser in Marshfield. Victor bought a cattle trucking business in 1971 and continued to operate it until 2011 and in 2001 he bought a dog food and bear bait business retiring in 2011.

Victor was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby, president of the Chequamegon Hound Club for a number of years and lifetime member of the Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association.

He enjoyed deer hunting, coon hunting and bear hunting, he also coached baseball and softball for the men’s and women’s league and liked to play cards and shoot pool. He also drove stock car and swam dogs for a number of years.

Victor is lovingly survived by his wife; Carolyn Smazal of Colby, his sons; Randy Smazal of Spencer, Rodney (April) Smazal of Unity, Richard (Amy) Smazal of Loyal and Robbie (Melissa) Smazal of Colby and grandchildren; Brandi, Jordan, James, Connor, Kylie, Dalton, Tristen and Bentley. He is further survived by his brothers; Eugene “Jack” (Irene) Smazal of Unity, Kenneth (Judy) Smazal of Unity and Donald Smazal of Colby, sisters; Jeanette Smazal of Wausau, Delores Petri of Auburndale, Carol (Ronald) Krueger of Abbotsford, Beverly Galowski of Medford, Carol Schwants of Schofield, Marcella Smazal of Colby and Marlene Galowski of Omro.

Victor is preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Edward and Charles Jr. and sisters; Bernice, Diane and Betty.

From 1961-1987 he worked for Owens-Illinois Timber Corp. in Tomahawk. Don also worked odd jobs in the Medford area until his retirement. He spent most of his life doing woodswork and loved it. He also enjoyed hobby farming, raising homer pigeons and horses, going to horse auctions and small animal sales.

Lawrence A Krak, 89 of Gilman, died Friday, April 26, 2013 at
the Gilman Care Center. He was born on December 7, 1923
to the late Michael and Mary (Kotecki) Krakowiecki.

Lawrencewas born and raised in Gilman graduating from Gilman High.
He went to study computer science at UW-EC and later Notre
Dame. Lawrence served his country during WWII in the army.
After his time in the service he returned to work in the
Minneapolis area until returning to Gilman in the late 70’s to

Lawrence was an avid outdoorsman and in later years was
instrumental in seeing the Timber Wolf removed from the
endangered species list. He also enjoyed tennis (in his
younger years), gardening and was a fan of all Wisconsin
sports teams.

 

He is survived by many cousins and friends.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, April
30, 2013 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilman
with Father Madanu Sleeva Raju officiating. Burial will follow in
the parish cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to
services at the church. The Gilman Funeral Home assisted

Walter W. “Wally” Nixdorf

Age 61, of Dorchester, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester. The Rev. Jerome Freimuth will officiate. Committal services will be held privately at a later date. Visitation will be Monday at the church in Dorchester from 3PM until 8PM and again on Tuesday at the church in Dorchester from 10AM until time of services. Serving as pallbearers will be Benjamin Nixdorf, Kraig Rusch, Travis Nixdorf, Travis Lueth, Aaron Lueth and Eric Waldvogel. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Life Tributes Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Spencer is assisting the family.

Walter “Wally” (aka Billy) William Nixdorf was born September 10, 1951 on the family farm in Clark County, the son of Walter F. and Lorna (Colby) Nixdorf. He attended Pleasant Hill grade school and graduated from Abbotsford High School later attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for four years. He delivered milk door to door for Hawkeye Dairy. His hard work led Wally to later become a partner/owner of Hawkeye Dairy. He later sold his interest in the dairy. On November 30, 1974 he married the love of his life Gloria (Lueth) in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester. In July, 1981 he started employment for the Athens Coop and Harmony Country Coop. He managed the fertilizer plant in Unity for 32 years where he was humbled and honored to serve his farmers, clients, feed and seed reps and his co-workers.

Hobbies included fishing trips to Canada, rifle deer hunting, bowling and traveling. Wally loved playing “Old Maid” with his grandkids, wrestling with those grandkids and was an avid Badger, Brewer and Packer fan.

Wally was a servant of the Lord by participating on various boards, committees and assisting the various pastors at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Memberships included St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dorchester, St. Peter Men’s Group and Abbotsford Sportsman’s Club.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Gloria of Dorchester, his children: Adam (Amber Rau) Nixdorf of Abbotsford; Andrea (Benjamin) Graff of Colby; his grandchildren: Ty Rau, Hannah Nixdorf, Blake Nixdorf, Jebediah Nixdorf, Jeremiah Collopy and Lydiah Collopy; his mother Lorna Nixdorf of Plover; two brothers: Paul Nixdorf of Minneapolis, MN and Allan (Mary) Nixdorf of Abbotsford and one sister Vicky (Don) Rusch of Polonia. Wally is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Wally was preceded in death by his father, Walter F. Nixdorf

Waverly Ann Jarvis, age 85, of Withee, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee. Rev. Bonnie Cain will officiate. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 12:00 noon until the time of service at the church in Withee. Burial will follow the service in the Riverside Cemetery, Withee.
 

Waverly was born September 14, 1927 to Clarence and Evelyn (Peterson) Mitchell in Iron River, MI. Waverly attended Iron River Schools and graduated from Iron River High School in 1945. She worked at the Telenews Theater in Chicago the summer of 1945 and attended the Masonic School of Nursing in Chicago and earned a RN Degree in 1948, when she moved back to Iron River and worked at the Chrystal Falls Hospital as a nurse for 3 years. Waverly married Arthur Jarvis on June 17, 1950 at the First Lutheran Church in Iron River, MI. After their marriage they moved to East Lansing, MI, where Art attended Michigan State University and earned a degree in Veterinary Medicine. They later moved to Cornell, WI for 3 years and moved to the Owen-Withee area and reside ever since. Waverly was the volunteer coordinator for the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen for more than 25 years.
Waverly was a generous and kind person that loved to golf, travel and meet new people. Among her travels she loved Hawaii and Greece the most. She was an active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee.
 

Waverly is survived by her son, Gary (Glorinda Marie) Jarvis of San Francisco Bay area, CA, her granddaughter; Angelina (Randy) Severson of the San Francisco Bay area and a great-grandson; Orion Severson, her sister; Jeannine (Jack) Watt of Iron River, MI and other relatives and friends.
Waverly is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter; Gayle Jarvis, and two brothers; Jim Mitchell and Bill Mitchell.

William M. Rudolph, age 86, of Cayuga, formerly of Medford, died on Tuesday April 30, 2013 at his home.  He was born on April 25, 1927 in Medford, the son of William H. and Clara (Bolz) Rudolph.  His early life and schooling were in Medford.  William was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War.  On May 28, 1953 he married Mildred Niemi in Ogema.  William worked as a mechanic at Frischman Motors in Medford in his younger years and then owned and operated the Medford Standard-Amoco Station for 25 years.  The couple moved to Cayuga after their retirement in 1980.     William was a member of the Medford and Glidden VFW and American Legion Posts.  He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and enjoyed trips to Canada and camping.

 

He is survived by:

Lillian Miller of Oshkosh

Kathleen (John) Kloehn of Minocqua

and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son William, and (2)brothers: Roy and Melvin Rudolph.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 4, 2013 at 11:00am from the Glidden VFW Hall.  Rev. Stanley Bahn will officiate.  Military Honors will follow under the auspices of the Glidden VFW Post.

 

A visitation will be held at the VFW Hall on Saturday from 10:00am until the hour of the service.

 

Burial will take place at 1:00pm on Monday May 6 at Evergreen Cemetery in Medford.
