Audrey (Gries) Stieber, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI with her family by her side. Audrey was 82. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 am Saturday, July 27, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. Father Dan Hackel will officiate. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM with a Rosary at 4 PM on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Colby and visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of services at the church in Colby. Private burial will be in Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Colby.
.
Audrey was born August 3, 1930 to Alphons and Ramona (Eder) Gries, Audrey spent the majority of her lifetime as a resident of Colby, WI. Audrey attended Saint Mary’s school and was a 1948 graduate of Colby High School.

After a whirlwind 9 month romance Audrey married Michael Stieber on July 9, 1952 at Saint Mary’s Church in Colby. They were married for 60 years before Michael’s death in 2012. Together they had four children: Chris, Jeff, Carol and Cathy. Audrey was a caring and supportive mom-she was a chauffeur extraordinaire, taking all four kids to orthodontic & optometrist appointments, attending almost all of their extracurricular events and was their biggest fan. She was a fun-loving individual who loved to bowl, dance, play cards, laugh and enjoyed the company of others.

Audrey received a bartender’s license at the age of 16 and worked tending bar at her parent’s business (Cherokee Store and Tavern). She also worked as a telephone operator on Colby’s switchboard. After her marriage she did some seasonal work packing gifts at Figi’s Cheese in Marshfield. She loved her time at Figi’s and had many fond memories of the friends she made while working there.

Audrey’s roots in the Colby community and Saint Mary’s church ran deep-they spanned four generations, beginning with her great-grandmother who was one of the earliest members of the newly founded church. She had a ferocious loyalty to her hometown. Always eager to help her community, she was a member of many service organizations: active member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Parish, VFW Ladies Auxiliary President, Saint Mary’s Home and School Association, Catholic Foresters, Girl Scout Leader, Red Cross Volunteer, and Election Poll worker.

Audrey was a living contradiction. She was just as willing to offer help to someone in need as she was unwilling to accept help for herself. She lived much of her life with a vitality rivaled only by the frailty with which it ended. She was nurturing and supportive; she was obstinate and stubborn. Audrey was loved by many people who were touched by her generosity, smile, laughter and light.

Audrey is preceded in death by her husband; Michael and her parents. She is survived by her brother; Adrian, her children; Christine (Ronald) Cross, Jeffrey (Barbe) Stieber, Carol (Leonard) Widra, Catherine (David) Simpson and six grandchildren; Quincy, McKenzie and Colby Stieber, Rachel and Joshua Widra and Renee Gibson.

There is nothing Audrey enjoyed more than playing cards with her family and friends. We know she is in a better place, playing cards and laughing up a storm with the friends and family that made their way before her. We’ll miss that laughter very much.

Laurie A. Raatz, 53, of Abbotsford, Wis., passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the House of The Dove in Marshfield, Wis.

Laurie was born February 25, 1960 to Henry M. and Mary L. (Downer) Weix.

Laurie graduated from Abbotsford High School in 1978. After graduation, she moved to Washington D.C. to work for the FBI. She was employed there for a year and then moved back home due to complications of her mother having to have knee surgery. She then went to work for her parents at H&M furniture and Spring Crest draperies.

Laurie married the love of her life on November 8, 1980 at St. Bernard Catholic Church.

Otto and Laurie purchased Spring Crest Draperies in 1992. Laurie was very proud of being the owner of Spring Crest Draperies and it was always her goal to make her customers happy. She was especially proud to be working for AIG Travel Guard in sales. Her most pleasurable times, though, were being Municipal Judge. It allowed her to help people and to help juveniles with truancy issues.
Laurie was very active in her community. She was always a kind, caring, and compassionate person. She was a longtime member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Abbotsford and served as President of the Housing Authority of Abbotsford.

Laurie had a natural talent for music. She played organ and piano for St. Bernard Catholic Church for 28 years and she also played the trumpet, clarinet, and flute. Her talents were beautiful and she often talked of becoming an orchestra director. Laurie also went back to school for her Associates in Medical Transcriptionist. In her free time, Laurie enjoyed watching her birds, gardening, and tending to her flowers. She especially loved her children and grandchildren.

Laurie was diagnosed with Stage IV endometrial carcinosarcoma in February 2013. And, it was a fast-moving, aggressive cancer. She fought very hard for her family. Despite her diagnosis, Laurie had a positive attitude on life and did not let the cancer get her down. She wore fashionable hats with style, flashed her “sparkly” smile, and shared her journey with others through a personal blog. Laurie lost her battle to cancer, but her will power will forever be remembered.

Laurie is lovingly survived by her husband, Otto Raatz, Abbotsford; and three children, Heather Calverley (Chad DeVore) of Wisconsin Rapids, Crystal (Andrew) Wuethrich of Marshfield,, and Michael Raatz (LynneaChelmo) of Abbotsford. She is further survived by 6 grandchildren, Evan Calverley of Wisconsin Rapids, Kaeden Siegman of Kronenwetter, Alexander Wuethrich of Marshfield, Julianna Wuethrich of Marshfield, Malakai Didier of Marshfield, and Tristyn Didier of Marshfield; two brothers, Dennis (Sheila) Weix of Edgar and James (Bonita) Weix of Abbotsford; two sisters, Katherine (Duane) Frey of Medford and Mary Jane (Mike) of Linton, Ind.; three brother-in-laws, Norman (Nancy) Raatz of Appleton, Marvin (Sandy) Raatz of Harshaw, and Gene (Gloria) Raatz of Sayner; two sister-in-laws, Verna (Stanley) McCabe of Kiel and Delores (Gary) Ewald of Marshfield, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins.
Laurie is preceded in death by her mother and father, Henry and Mary Weix, and sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Raatz.

The Raatz family would like to thank the medical teams of both St. Joseph’s Hospital and Marshfield Clinic; specifically, the staff on the 8th floor oncology and 4th floor palliative care unit. The family would also like to thank the staff at the House of The Dove for their care in her final days. Special thanks to Dr. Bseiso, oncologist, and his medical assistant, Tina, at Marshfield Clinic.
